Dragons of Newport Business Club - Every Wednesday

Event Chosen Charity

Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA)

Dragons of Newport are pleased to announce Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) as the chosen charity for our next open networking event on 6th June 2018.

About Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA)

The Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) was formed in 1973 as a lifeboat organisation, and since 1985 it has also formally had a ‘land’ role as part of Mountain Rescue - originally for performing cliff rescue in the Wye Valley and in more recent years missing person searches.  SARA has always covered the Usk and other rivers in the Newport area, and has had a presence in Newport since 2014.  The Newport Lifeboat Station, at Malpas, was formed in 2015 and two brand new lifeboats were purchased in 2016.  There is a growing team of operational lifeboat crew based in Newport, carrying pagers and ready to respond 24 x 7 x 365 to an emergency request from the Coastguard or Police.  They have been involved in many searches and rescue operations, typically 30 or 40 a year for the Newport team alone.

SARA is an entirely volunteer organsation, and received no statutory government funding.  It is entirely dependent on donations, fundraising efforts and grants received from various organisations.  It has a high profile in the areas in which it operates, and as an independent organisation it has great flexibility in what it can offer to potential donors, sponsors and other stakeholders.
